On account of a fascinating conversation I had yesterday, I realized that blogs, or at least tumblrs, seem to follow some sort of type. I took it upon myself to attempt to figure out exactly what “type” my own tumblr is, but I sadly came to the conclusion that my tumblr is a jumbled mess of nonsensical and random posts that does not follow a particular type. However, please refer below to the list of twelve tumblr “types” that I believe are most popular. Perhaps you will find some similarities to your own blog.
Disclaimer! This is just in general. I’m not, in any way, targeting your own personal blog! :)
1. the “emotastic” tumblr - Probably the most depressing to read; also the most worrisome. ex. I hate my life; I hate your life; I hate the world; I wish we would just all die already.
2. the “sappy” tumblr - my personal favorite. Think “my life is complete now that you’re in it.” ex. lovely picture of hand-holding, skipping, or rainbows and butterflies accompanied by a quote about love, friendship, happiness, or a combination of all three.
3. the “emotional waterfall” tumblr - written by people who use tumblr as an outlet to express their pent-up emotions this type of tumblr is complete with run-on sentences and extremely long posts that don’t seem to have a clear point think poorly written personal essays or maybe Nathaniel Hawthorne.
4. the “quotes are fantastic!” tumblr - “Fresh ideas are not always the best ideas.” - fortune cookie
5. the “inspirational” tumblr - self-explanatory. Most popular after New Years. ex. I’m going to take control of my life now!
6. the “I’m stuck in the past” tumblr - written by people who are obsessed with/cannot get over past events in their life. Most overused phrase - “I wish”. ex. I wish I hadn’t made that mistake. I wish we were still together. Why won’t you forgive me???
7. the “aspiring writer” tumblr - also pretty self-explanatory. long, essay-like posts. Future English majors of the world.
8. the “bordering on stalkerish, crazy fan” tumblr - basically a shrine to some musician, actor, tv show, movie, etc. ex. Look where Taylor Lautner was today! Doesn’t he look cute in this picture? Did you know that he likes onions? I like onions too! We’re meant to be together!
9. the “I make it so easy for you to stalk me” tumblr - authors obviously don’t realize that tumblr is PUBLIC. ex. Today I went to my friend’s house. She lives on Huntington Drive. Then I went to Starbucks. Tomorrow, I’m going to go to the Santa Anita Mall at 3 p.m. to watch Toy Story 3! umm, that’s what a twitter’s for!
10. the “I’m so in love!” tumblr - ex. Today he actually looked at me! <33333 Best day ever!
11. the “deep” tumblr - authors are like English teachers; they can find meaning in just about anything.
12. the “my favorite button is reblog” tumblr - authors are either a) too lazy to come up with their own post, b) excited to share some cool picture/story/etc. with the rest of the tumblr world, or c) too paranoid to post anything about their own personal life.
Since I’ve been going through a rather depressing period of “writer’s block”, or, more aptly named, “tumblr’s block”, I thought it might be a good idea to go through one of those 20, 30, or 40 day challenge things. However, none of the ones that I could find seemed fitting for me. Therefore, I am creating my own, “TWELVE DAY CHALLENGE”, where I will select a “type” of tumblr every day (not necessarily in the order above) to embody. Who knows? Maybe I will find the “type that most suits me.
